Formal education here included the primary, secondary and higher education levels. Three years of preschool education were offered in some areas but were a matter of choice. The types of secondary school were several and the majority of students attended the six year liceo upon which successful candidates were awarded the bachillerato certificate which was also geared toward university education.
Nonetheless, there were lower levels of secondary school enrollment and the government subsequently decreed major reforms from the 1970s. At present, things have change greatly.
