Dominican dictators

After it independence the Dominican Republic has lived longer under dictatorships than in democracy.

The first dictator, General Pedro Santana, really set the stage for future dictators: he had several of the heroes of the independence movement, including Maria Trinidad Sanchez and Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, shot, and had even Juan Pablo Duarte himself exiled.

Next comes Buenaventura Baez who printed money until it was worthless.

Canīt forget General Ulysses Hereaux, hero of the Restauration of the Republic, and right hand man of General Gregorio Luperon.Extremely witty and cruel man. His anecdotes will make you laugh.

Trujilloīs thirty one years are still under discussion: was there anything "good" done during those years?

A museum has been proposed to showcase the "good" and the "bad"!

Was Dr. Joaquin Balaguer a dictator? He certainly ran the country like one. Few in the (left wing) opposition are still alive.

It makes interesting reading if you want the details.

Cheers!
