Dominican Republic's history in whatever sector of the economy will be non-exhaustive.
It occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. Arawak immigrants moving northwards from the Orinoco delta in South America, settled the islands of the Caribbean. Around AD 600, the Taino Indians, a late stone age culture, arrived on the island, displacing the previous inhabitants.
Christopher Columbus, while on his first voyage arrived there in December 1942. In the belief that the Europeans were somehow supernatural, the Tainos gladly welcomed them.
