In the large cities of the Dominican Republic, such as Santo Domingo, Santiago, la Vega, La Romana, etc. the standard means of transportation are the "publico" cars that follow routes on the major streets and avenues.
There is a standard fee for a one way ride in the direction you are going. If you want to continue or return, you must pay the fee again.
In Santo Domingo you can board the new "Metro" train for which only one route has been opened, Villa Mella. It is an extremely comfortable and fast means of transportation that is not the typical local chaotic way.
Then, if you desire an individual passenger ride, you must call a taxi company telephone number and give them the pick up point. In a few minutes you will be picked up and taken to your destination for a certain fee which will be informed at pick up. Never begin the ride without that agreement on the fee as there can be a surprise at the end if you don´t (and look American).
